Great Basin March meeting Thursday March 12th at 7:00 pm with Dr. David Smith from Northland Pioneer College. Dr. Smith’s talk is titled: Uncovering the biology of therizinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous of southern Utah
Dr. Smith went to Brigham Young University and studied paleontology under Dr. Wade Miller, so he has been involved in Utah paleontology for some time. Currently, he is teaching human anatomy and physiology at Northland Pioneer College in east-central Arizona. For the last several years, his research has focused on maniraptoran theropods housed at the Utah Museum of Natural History with an emphasis on therizinosaurs Nothronychus and Falcarius from southern Utah. He has been seeking to enhance our understanding of these unusual herbivorous theropods by studying their anatomy from a number of different angles, including embryology, neurology, axial pneumaticity, osteology, soft tissue anatomy, force distribution, and functional morphology. This work is based on CT data and computer modelling.
The meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Utah Department of Natural Resources/Utah Geological Survey main building, located at 1594 W North Temple St, Salt Lake City 84116. If this is your first time coming to a meeting in person, please give yourself a few extra minutes to accommodate for parking. Everyone, please enter the DNR building from the front, main entrance off North Temple. The front, main entrance doors should have someone who can direct you to the auditorium.
This will be a hybrid meeting to accommodate folks who cannot attend in person. The online meeting can be accessed through this link: meet.google.com/hzr-pkdu-wtp
