The Mill Canyon Dinosaur Bone Trail offers a unique opportunity to see dinosaur bone still encased in rock. This is a short, self-guided interpretive trail with signs along the way.
Description
The trail starts at the Dinosaur Trailhead. To get there, drive 15 miles north of Moab on U.S. 191, the turn left onto a dirt road (marked “Mill Canyon”). This road is just north of highway milepost 141. Be careful when crossing the train tracks. Proceed 0.6 miles on this dirt road to a “Y” intersection. Turn left at this point; go 0.5 miles to another intersection. Turn right here. The Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail is 0.6 miles away along this route. At the trailhead, you will find a parking area and interpretive signs both at the parking area and along the trail itself. This is an easy short walk. Trail is off camber and uneven packed dirt.
Localities like these are rare and need to be preserved for generations to come. Please be cautious and considerate when observing these dinosaur bones. Do not walk on the actual fossils themselves. Collecting vertebrate fossils from Public Lands is illegal and violators will be prosecuted. Any disturbing, casting, rubber, or pouring anything into the fossils is expressly forbidden under federal regulations. Help the BLM preserve these paleontological resources for future generations by treating them with respect and reporting looting or vandalism to a Bureau of Land Management ranger or other local authority. Contact the BLM-Utah Moab Field Office at 435 259-2100.
